Pet Care

A Day Behind the Scenes at Smith’s Pets

When you walk into Smith’s Pets, you’ll see shelves full of products, animals happily going about their day, and staff ready to help. What you might not see is everything that happens behind the scenes to keep the shop running smoothly.

Running a pet shop isn’t just about selling products — it’s about daily care routines, animal welfare checks, cleaning, deliveries, and helping pet owners make the right choices for their animals. Every day is busy, varied, and centred around one thing: the wellbeing of the animals in our care.

Here’s a little look at what a typical day looks like for the team.

Morning Welfare Checks

We begin by making sure everyone is doing well.

That means checking enclosures, observing behaviour, and making sure the animals are active and comfortable. These checks help us quickly spot if anything needs attention.

Cleaning and Enclosure Care

Keeping the animals’ homes clean is just as important as feeding them. Throughout the morning we’ll spot-clean enclosures, refresh bedding where needed, and tidy enclosures to keep everything comfortable and hygienic.

Feeding Time

Next comes feeding time. Different animals have different diets, so food is prepared carefully depending on the species.

Suitable fresh fruit and vegetables are prepared for each of our animals. Hay and pellets are given to rabbits and guinea pigs, seed mixes are topped up for birds, and water bottles and bowls are checked and refilled.

It’s a simple routine, but it’s one of the most important parts of the day.

What Happens During the Day?

During the day, the focus shifts to keeping the store running smoothly while continuing to care for the animals.

Helping Customers

A big part of the day is spent chatting with customers and helping them find the right things for their pets. Some people are preparing for a new pet, while others just need help choosing the right food or upgrading their setup.

Whether it’s choosing the right enclosure, understanding diet requirements, or troubleshooting a small problem, our team is always happy to help.

Keeping the Shop Running

Behind the scenes, there’s also a constant flow of jobs happening to keep everything organised.

Deliveries arrive throughout the day, shelves need restocking, new products are checked in, and displays are updated.

At the same time, the team is always keeping the shop clean and tidy so it’s a nice place to visit.

Checking on the Animals

Even with everything else going on, the animals are never far from our attention.

Staff regularly check in throughout the day to make sure everyone is comfortable, food and water are topped up, and enclosures stay clean and safe.

The End of the Day

As the day winds down, the team starts getting everything ready for the next morning.

The shop gets a final tidy, enclosures are refreshed where needed, and we make sure all the animals are settled in comfortably for the evening. And of course, there’s often time for a gentle cuddle or two before lights out.

More Than Just a Pet Shop

Running a pet shop is a lot of work behind the scenes, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Every day is different, and the team is always learning, helping customers, and caring for animals.

For visitors, it might just be a quick stop to pick up food or treats. For us, it’s a full day dedicated to keeping animals happy and helping pet owners give their pets the best care possible.
